Sappi and Agricolleges launch online forestry training to empower small-scale growers

Sappi has partnered with Agricolleges International to launch an innovative online forestry training programme aimed at uplifting small-scale timber growers, contractors, and land reform beneficiaries. The initiative is part of Sappi’s broader strategy to create shared value in its forestry supply chain while improving the viability and sustainability of emerging forestry enterprises.

Duane Roothman, Vice President of Sappi Forests, explained the significance of the programme: “By offering practical and accessible training, we’re helping small growers become sustainable businesses that can integrate fully into the forestry value chain, including achieving PEFC certification—an increasingly important standard for our customers.”

Francois Oberholzer from Forestry South Africa also welcomed the initiative, noting that it supports the goals of the Amended Forest Sector Code by enabling broader participation in the forestry value chain and improving operational capacity through targeted skills development.

Agricolleges’ Wynand Espach highlighted the accessibility of the courses, which are available online and via mobile devices. With multilingual facilitator support and guidance throughout, learners can access training regardless of their location.

The programme currently offers four courses:

  1. Introduction to the Forestry Value Chain (3 weeks, R2,700)
  2. Forestry Health and Safety (2 weeks, R1,800)
  3. Forestry Certification Basics – FSC and PEFC (2 weeks, R1,800)
  4. Managing the Environment in Forestry (2 weeks, R1,800)

Learners who complete all four courses will be invited to a one-week practical session at the Sappi Forestry Skills Centre near Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal, with accommodation and meals provided. While training is free, participants must cover their travel and bring their own PPE.

Sappi and Agricolleges plan to expand the programme to include modules on silviculture, harvesting, and business management, eventually developing a fully accredited NQF5-level qualification, with content available in isiZulu.
